iPhone Captures 4MP Images

As we all know, iPhone camera is a 2 megapixel camera. How could it capture 4 megapixel images? A recent iPhone application, ClearCam, can help you. ClearCam provides iPhone the enhanced capturing mode, by taking 6 photos sequentially in a very short time (2.5 seconds). It then creates a sharper, 4 megapixel image with less noise by combining these 6 photos. 

The technique used here is called multi-frame image super-resolution in computer vision. The idea is to increase the resolution of a captured image by fusing information from multiple images or a short video.

Content-Aware Image Resizing Goes to iPhone

Content-aware image resizing (also called content-aware image retargeting, content-aware image scaling) is to enlarge or reduce the size of an image with minimum distortion of salient or important areas of the image. This is a very useful image processing feature for professional photography, online publishing and handheld-device display.

Real-Time Panorama Shooting Using Cell Phone Camera

Take a short video clip by panning your cell phone camera through a scene, the embedded algorithm wil automatically generate a panoramic picture for you instantly. This is a new cell phone photography feature in Sharp cell phones (e.g. SH9020C model).

This feature is called “VIVID Panorama” co-developed by Acrodea, Inc. and Morpho, Inc., Japan. In contrast to previous panoramic functions, such as iPhone applications, PanaLab and TripStitch, which stitch multiple still images into a panoramic photo, VIVID Panorama directly uses captured video clip to generate a panoramic picture, making it easy-to-use. It is fully automated and in real time.

  1. SnapTell: Tell the price, store, or online website of a CD/DVD/Book/Video Game with a photographed cover image. This is an image retrieval/recognition problem.
  2. CubeCheater: Solve your puzzle cube with six pictures taken for each face of the cube. It uses image segmentation and blob detection technology.
