Killer Applications in Computer Vision

A picture is worth a thousand words!

As more and more consumer electronics products are equipped with cameras, visual analytics play a more and more important role for our computers to better understand the world. Breakthrough computer vision technologies are coming out of the lab to the real world. These technologies enable value added applications for the business, and revolutionized products for our daily life. Large amount novel applications have emerged, some of which are briefed as follows.

Visual Search: In spite of the fast development and wide applications of text-based search technologies (e.g., google, yahoo, microsoft search engines), visual search is still in its infancy. Due to the richer information in pictures, we believe, visual search will lead the next wave of search engine revolution.

Video Surveillance: With the “9.11” tragedy, homeland security becomes an important issue for every country. Video based surveillance, automatic video analytics, biometrics-based access control, and human behavior analysis will undoubtedly enhance the security and safety of our community and prevent the loss of our properties.

Virtual Reality: There are enormous applications of virtual reality, include but not limited to, the virtual world (e.g., the second life), motion capture and 3D scene synthesis for movie and game (entertainment) industries. The integration of computer vision and graphics brings the astonishing visual impression of art and technology.

Visual Electronics: Cell phones, TVs, and projectors have been or are being embedded with cameras, to provide intelligent capabilities.

Medical Imaging: Our healthcare increasingly depends on vision technologies, which enables some emerging applications, such as computer aided diagnosis of diseases and video guided invasive surgery.

And Many Others: Visual inspection, robotics, machine vision, mobile vision, night vision, and so on…

This is an interdisciplinary area, in which multiple-domain knowledge or expertise are needed to better understand the images, such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Machines Learning, Neuroscience, Robotics, and Information Retrieval.

This is an exciting field. A lot of extraordinary students or professionals are devoted to this field.
